Butts County doesn't have a Buc-ee's or a major mall. What it has is arguably better: old-growth forest, genuinely historic sites, state parks that rank among the finest in the Southeast, and a downtown Jackson that Hollywood keeps using as a film set. Here's what to do when you're here.
1. Visit All Three State Parks
Butts County and its immediate surroundings are home to three distinct state parks, each worth visiting. Indian Springs State Park (one of the oldest in the nation) offers a historic mineral spring, a lake, and camping. High Falls State Park delivers one of Georgia's most dramatic waterfalls. Dauset Trails Nature Center is a free wildlife preserve with 17 miles of trails and native Georgia animals you won't see at a zoo.
2. Walk the Downtown Jackson Square
Jackson's historic courthouse square is legitimately charming โ and if you've watched Stranger Things, it'll look very familiar. The downtown area features local shops, restaurants, and the beautiful 1898 Butts County Courthouse, which now serves as a museum and visitor center.
3. Eat at Fresh Air Barbecue
This isn't just a meal. It's a pilgrimage that Middle Georgians have been making since 1929. Fresh Air BBQ on GA-42 is a bucket-list restaurant for anyone who takes Georgia food seriously.
4. Fish Jackson Lake
Created in 1910 by the Lloyd Shoals Dam, Jackson Lake is a beloved recreational destination with excellent bass and crappie fishing. Multiple public access points and boat ramps make it accessible for anglers of every level.
5. Attend a Local Event
Butts County has a strong community events calendar throughout the year โ from the Indian Springs Festival to high school sports that the whole town turns out for. Check our Events page for what's coming up.
