Dauset Trails Nature Center on Mount Vernon Road in Jackson is the kind of place that locals treasure and visitors discover with genuine delight. It's a 1,200-acre wildlife preserve operated by Butts County that manages to feel both completely wild and thoughtfully organized. And best of all, admission is completely free.

The Wildlife

The native animal exhibits are what set Dauset apart from a standard hiking trail. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, river otters, red foxes, great horned owls, black bears, and many other species native to Georgia live in large, naturalistic enclosures throughout the preserve. The up-close encounters with native wildlife โ€” especially animals that are rarely seen in the wild โ€” make Dauset a genuinely special experience for visitors of all ages.

The Trails

Seventeen miles of well-marked trails wind through the 1,200-acre property, ranging from easy flat loops to more challenging ridgeline routes. The trail system connects with Indian Springs State Park, making it possible to spend a full day hiking between the two properties. Bring water โ€” there are limited facilities once you're on the trails.

Fishing Ponds

The preserve has several stocked fishing ponds accessible to visitors with a valid Georgia fishing license. Bass and bream are the primary species. It's a quieter, more intimate fishing experience than the larger lakes in the area.

Educational Programs

Dauset runs regular educational programs, school field trips, and seasonal events throughout the year. Scout troops, homeschool groups, and birthday parties frequently use the facility. Call ahead to inquire about group programs.
