Tucked just south of Jackson off Highway 42, Indian Springs State Park holds a distinction that few realize: it's one of the oldest state parks in the entire United States. Georgia officially designated it a state park in 1927, but the land's history as a destination stretches back centuries โ to when Creek Nation leader William McIntosh built a hotel here in the 1820s to capitalize on the area's famous mineral spring.
The Spring Itself
The natural artesian mineral spring that gives the park its name is still flowing, and visitors still come to fill jugs with the sulfur-tinged water that generations have claimed has healing properties. Whether you believe in the folklore or not, the spring house is a genuinely fascinating piece of Georgia history.
What to Do at Indian Springs
The park offers far more than its storied spring. Lake McIntosh provides excellent opportunities for fishing (bass, crappie, bream), pedal boating, and swimming. The trail system winds through beautiful forest, and the miniature golf course is a hit with families. CCC-built stone structures throughout the park give it a classic, timeless feel unlike anything else in Central Georgia.
Camping & Cottages
Indian Springs has 60 RV and tent campsites with a central bathhouse, plus cozy cottages that sleep up to six. The cottages book up fast on summer weekends, so plan ahead. A conference center near the lake makes it a popular spot for reunions and group events.
Hours & Fees
The park is open daily from 7am to 10pm. Office hours are 8amโ5pm. A daily ParkPass fee is required for day visitors and is included for overnight guests. The Georgia State Parks Annual Pass is valid here and pays for itself quickly if you visit multiple parks.
